Clinical evidence

Based on much of our research, the German Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) conducted an interesting study using Almased, a low-glycaemic, protein-rich, isoflavone-rich meal replacement. In total, they enrolled 48 patients and provided an initial consultation to discuss energy balance and therapeutic lifestyle changes. Subsequently, the participants received Almased®, 1 g per kg normal weight twice a day. Among the 40 patients who completed the programme, significant results were seen in terms of weight loss and metabolic parameters notably, all completers lost weight (females -5.3%, males -5.6%) and had significant metabolic improvements (cholesterol, BMI, blood sugar, triglycerides). The IPM concept proved to be a successful way to lose weight and improve the metabolic environment associated with obesity in a short period. Moreover, it generated demonstrable health benefits after 6 weeks of intervention, even among a subgroup of patients with impaired glucose tolerance. Almased showed not only a calorie-sparing effect but provided potential health benefits, including reduced body fat, reduced hepatic fat, improved fatty acid metabolism (lowered plasma LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels), and decreased insulin resistance. In addition, health-related quality of life was also improved by the use of this meal replacement shake.
