Your BMI is

Underweight

Your BMI is in the underweight range. This means that your weight is too low for your height. Underweight can have various causes and can be caused, for example, by mental illness, stress or other diseases. In combination with a nutrient deficiency, which is common when food intake is too low, underweight can increase the risk of developing diseases such as osteoporosis. It also makes the body less resistant to infections and less able to perform. Therefore, it is important to work with your health care provider to determine the cause and discuss a strategy for gaining weight.

How it works

What effects do age and gender have on BMI?

In principle, the BMI can be used to roughly categorise body weight for all people from the age of eight. However, the categorisation given is only suitable for adults aged 18 and over. A separate BMI table is used for children and adolescents. But even for adults, it makes sense to take age into account when classifying BMI. The reason for this is that due to changes in metabolism and body composition, the range of normal weight shifts somewhat upwards with age. So it is quite natural to gain some weight with age and thus the BMI increases slightly. Gender should also be taken into account in order to get a more reliable classification. Men, for example, usually have a higher BMI due to the physiologically higher proportion of muscle, which shifts the range of normal weight slightly upwards.

BMI and its limitations

The BMI is a good method to quickly and easily classify one's own body weight and to assess possible weight-related health risks. However, it is not suitable as the sole criterion for classifying individual health, as other important life circumstances are disregarded. For example, BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass, which can lead to athletes being wrongly classified as being overweight.

On the other hand, a BMI in the normal range does not guarantee that one is not exposed to health risks. Another simple method that allows a more accurate assessment of health status or disease risk is to measure abdominal circumference. Metabolically active abdominal fat, which promotes the development of many weight-related diseases, can be determined by this method and thus a more accurate statement about the state of health can be made.
